Real NC Wedding : Elizabeth & Matt at The Sutherland Estate
High school sweethearts Elizabeth and Matt were kind enough to share their beautiful Sutherland wedding with us through our real wedding submission form. This lovely couple had a gorgeous ceremony and reception at the Wake Forest estate, and made use of their gorgeous new pavilion. A fantastic group of wedding vendors helped make their wedding day dreams come true in addition to The Sutherland Estate, including Brides and Bouquets, Rocky Top Catering, Perfection by Patricia, Renaissance Raleigh Hotel, and Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern. The event was photographed by the talented Lauren Mann Photography.
We love the incredibly sweet words that Elizabeth shared with us about her wedding planning process and how she used Weddings Magazine! Read on for their love story, and to hear more about their special day.
How did you and your fiancé meet and begin dating?: We met at Broughton High School in Physics class. We were paired up as lab partners and became quick friends. It wasn’t until a couple weeks later and a date to the fair that we actually began dating. We both went to Appalachian and 6 years later were married after graduation. It had been a long time coming and we were so excited to start on our new adventure together.
One thing we did starting in our engagement was have a journal that we passed back and forth. We both wrote our versions of how we met and special dates and exchange it at different times during our engagement. It was special being able to relive some of our biggest moments through Matt’s eyes. On our wedding day we each wrote a final letter in the journal and read it to each other.
How did you and your fiancé get engaged?: Matt and I are adventure buddies. Because of this, Matt knew he couldn’t propose any other way. One spring day in April, Matt took me to Biltmore for a date. It was the one thing we wanted to do that we hadn’t done since going to Appalachian. We took a tour of the house, had lunch and hiked all over the property. When we took a quick break on a hill overlooking the house, Matt asked me to marry him. He was as nervous as could be, which I still find funny. I was so excited and we ended the day on a winery tour. Afterwards he surprised me by having my parents and his at a restaurant in Blowing rock that I also had been dying to go to. I guess you could say it was one adventure I will never forget!
Tell us a little about your wedding planning experience – How did you choose your venue/theme/venders?: I knew I wanted a classic wedding. My photographer and family friend helped with a lot of our vendors! I truly felt like I had the A team. I loved all of my vendors and think each one did an outstanding job helping me accomplish my vision. They all had worked together before which I think helped me because they knew how to support each other and work together. The Forever Bridal show however helped me with two of the most important. There I found out about The Sutherland and Opus 1. I knew Sutherland would be the classic, elegant place for my wedding and Opus 1 continued that theme through all my pieces they created.

Keep it up!
What were your wedding colors and did you have a theme? How did you make this event personal?: My Favorite color is purple so I used purple as my main color. I also used a lot of warm colors colors for my flowers and lots of neutrals. I wanted a timeless, classic wedding! Opus 1, which I met at the Forever Bridal event, helped me personalize my wedding in a way I can’t thank them enough for. They used our unique silhouette from our save the date in all our pieces from our programs, to guest book, to candy bar! It was so cool to tie that it. I wanted the weekend to be centered around family so keeping things simple and family oriented also meant a lot to me.
Where do you and your husband now live? What are your professions?: We live in Durham! The perfect in between place for my commute to Raleigh and Matt’s to Elon. He’s going to school for Physical Therapy and I work in Human Resources at a telecommunications company called Bandwidth.
