Real NC Wedding : Susanna & Rob by Cathy Anna Designs at A Vintage Eclectic Affair
They say that love is in the details, and nothing is more true when it comes to very special wedding days. Cathy Anna Designs created a fun and eclectic vintage-inspired wedding that is both unique and lovely. Originally featured in our 2015 issue, this sweet wedding had a ceremony just as delightful as the reception, and we cannot get enough of the bride’s tea-length Oscar de la Renta gown!
It was a beautiful spring day in May when Susannah and Rob tied the knot at Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham, NC. The bride wore a stunning tea-length gown by Oscar de La Renta in a creamy shade of ivory, with an illusion neckline, lace appliqués, and just the right amount of sparkle in a delicate beaded belt. The bridal party carried lush hand-tied bouquets filled with soft pink roses, amorous greenery and blue floral accents. Hanging floral arrangements were also placed at each mother’s chair with soft blush peonies and berries in wrought iron containers.
The gazebo in Duke Gardens was brimming with fresh Jasmine, creating a natural arbor that framed the happy couple as they said, “I do.” A trio of trombonists from the University of North Carolina provided the ceremony music, lending a classic sound that was a fresh interpretation of the traditional wedding processional. Susannah and Rob incorporated a cord ceremony into their vows, braiding three purple, gold and white ropes together to symbolize their union of marriage and the integral role of Christ and faith holding them together.
The reception was held at the historic Trotter Building in Downtown Durham and was coordinated by the talented Cathy Anna Designs. Upon arrival, guests were treated to refreshing mojito and raspberry LocoPops, a local Durham favorite. Once inside, the guests signed vintage postcards that the bride had been collecting for several years. This unique and sentimental take on a “guest book” gave attendees the opportunity to leave sweet and special messages to the couple, as well as provided Susannah and Rob with their addresses! The “Vintage Eclectic” theme, executed by Cathy Anna Designs, reflected the couple’s personalities. A mix of old and new, with a touch of rustic, using an elegant mix of burlap, antique colored glass bottles, cigar boxes and hatboxes. Tree branches held hanging tea lights and peonies as centerpieces, and each one was unique to convey the couple’s desire to be creative and bold. Embracing the theme of “old and new,” Cathy Anna Designs placed vintage milk cans, padlocks, crates and other antiques throughout the room, adding to the overall ambiance.
Dinner was catered by Danny’s Barbeque of RTP, and gave guests a true taste of the South with barbequed chicken, pulled pork and all of the traditional fixings. Dessert was a three-tiered cake in a creamy white Swiss meringue with blue Cornelli lace accents set atop an antique dairy crate. Mini cupcakes were displayed on vintage produce crates, giving the guests three more tantalizing flavors to choose from.
The room was set aglow with hanging Chinese lanterns in white and royal blue, accented by various tea lights throughout, creating and ambient and intimate space. Guests danced the night away to Curtis Eller’s American Circus Band, playing on the couples fun and quirky style. Eller brought his style of music to the South from New York City, and describes his sound as “inelegant rock and roll… Specializing in banjo music for funerals, gospel tunes for atheists and novelty dance fads for amputees.” Obviously, their funky sound created a vibrant and unique atmosphere that brought folks onto the dance floor in droves.
